THE SWEDISH WAY
Swedish Christmas, or Jul, is a deeply cherished holiday filled with warmth, tradition, and festive joy. Celebrations begin early in December, with homes decorated in glowing candles, paper stars, and straw ornaments. A key part of the season is Advent, marked by lighting candles each Sunday leading up to Christmas, and St. Lucia’s Day on December 13th, when children dress in white and sing songs to celebrate light during the darkest time of the year.
The main celebration happens on Julafton (Christmas Eve), when families gather to share a traditional meal called the julbord, which includes meatballs, pickled herring, ham, potatoes, and rice pudding. After the meal, it’s time for the arrival of Jultomten—the Swedish Santa—who brings gifts, often handed out in person with a friendly visit. Throughout the season, there is a strong focus on togetherness, tradition, and creating a cozy atmosphere known as julmys. Swedish Christmas is a magical blend of folklore, faith, and festive cheer that brings families and communities together.
